ICE vs HEV vs PHEV vs BEV: What's the Difference?
GUIDES

If you're shopping for a car in the Philippines today, you've probably seen these four terms everywhere: ICE, HEV, PHEV, and BEV. But what do they actually mean β and more importantly, which one makes sense for your life on Philippine roads?
This guide breaks it all down in simple, plain language:
Internal Combustion Engine (ICE)
A traditional gasoline or diesel vehicle. It is a system that worked for over 100 years.
π‘How it drives: Engine moves the car.
π‘Technology Level: Traditional; Mature and well-understood technology.
π‘Main Strength: Easy to refuel anywhere in the country.
π‘Main Weakness: Highest fuel and maintenance cost.Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV)
A fuel engine plus a small electric system that helps save fuel. The key element here is that you'll never plug it in.
π‘How it drives: Engine does most of the work, but electric motor helps especially in traffic.
π‘Technology Level: Advanced; Automatically blends fuel and electric systems.
π‘Main Strength: Great for Philippine city traffic; no charger needed.
π‘Main Weakness: Still uses gasoline; still has engine complexity.Plug-In Hybrid Vehicle (PHEV)
It has both fuel engine and a stronger electric system. You go to a gas station for fuel and plug in to charge the battery.
π‘How it drives: Electric motor can drive the car for short trips; engine activates when battery is low or empty.
π‘Technology Level: Very Advanced; Can run as both a full EV and a hybrid.
π‘Main Strength: Flexible: electric driving + gasoline backup.
π‘Main Weakness: Most complex system; benefits lost if not charged regularly.Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV)
It runs purely electric. No fuel tank, no engine, no oil change.
π‘How it drives: Electric motor alone drives the car.
π‘Technology Level: Most Electric-Focused; Full-electric system, fewest moving parts.
π‘Main Strength: Lowest running and cost maintenance.
π‘Main Weakness: Charging access is the key requirement. If you're not sure which one's for you. That's okay, there's a lot to consider. The rest of this series breaks it all down piece by piece: costs, charging, weather, typhoons, and more. Read what's relevant to you, skip what's not. β‘
